Korean Contact Lens Terms for U.S. Shoppers: Power, DIA & More

Korean contact-lens labels can help you understand a product listing, but translation alone cannot confirm a prescription, fit, or safe substitute. Start by identifying the exact model and what each label describes. Then compare the full contact-lens prescription for each eye, the lens format, and the number of individual lenses in the box. If a listing is unclear or leaves out a field, ask before ordering.

Korean contact-lens terms at a glance
| Korean or listing term | Common English meaning | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 도수 | Power / prescription power | Whether it refers to SPH, and the exact value for each eye. |
| 무도수 | Plano / no spherical power, often shown as 0.00 | It does not mean that no fitting or prescription is needed. |
| 난시용 | Toric / for astigmatism | Look for CYL and AXIS options for the exact model. |
| 직경 (DIA) | Overall lens diameter | Part of the product’s lens design; it is not the printed color size. |
| 착색직경 (G.DIA) | Graphic diameter / printed color diameter | Describes the approximate printed area, not fit or vision correction. |
| 베이스커브 (BC) | Base curve | One lens-design value; matching it alone does not show that another model fits. |
| 함수율 | Water content | A material specification, not a stand-alone comfort prediction. |
| 재질 | Material | Check the exact product label and manufacturer instructions. |
| 원데이 / 1Day | Daily disposable format | Follow the exact labeling and discard schedule. |
| 한달용 / 1Month | Monthly replacement format | Check its cleaning, disinfection, and replacement instructions. |
| 색상 / 컬러 | Color / shade | A cosmetic description; it does not establish prescription or fit. |
| 10P / 20P | Lens quantity notation used by some listings | Confirm whether the package contains individual lenses or pairs. |
Retailers may abbreviate fields or use different layouts. Treat this glossary as a starting point, not a legal or clinical translation of your prescription. If a Korean and English product page show different information, pause and ask the seller to identify the exact model and package version. Ask your eye-care professional to explain prescription and fitting fields.
DIA and G.DIA describe different measurements
DIA is the overall diameter of the lens. G.DIA or 착색직경 refers to the approximate diameter of the printed iris pattern. The print can influence the visual impression of enlargement, ring definition, and color coverage. These measurements answer different product questions and should not be swapped.
A larger G.DIA does not mean that a lens fits better, corrects vision more effectively, or will look identical on every wearer. The visible effect also depends on the pattern, opacity, natural iris, pupil size, lighting, and camera conditions. Product photos can help you compare style, but they cannot show on-eye movement or establish clinical suitability.
Read DIA and G.DIA from the same exact product version. Do not copy a measurement from another shade, replacement format, or seller page just because the names look similar. If either value is missing, mark it as unknown and ask for confirmation instead of estimating it from a photo.
Know where a listing translation ends
SPH or PWR usually refers to spherical power. A current contact-lens prescription may also contain CYL, which describes astigmatism correction, and AXIS, which describes its orientation. OD and OS identify the right and left eyes. Preserve every sign, decimal, and eye designation exactly; the two eyes may have different values.
“무도수” or “0.00” means no spherical corrective power in that field. It does not mean “no fitting required” or “risk-free.” In the United States, the FDA says decorative and colored contact lenses require a prescription, including lenses sold without vision correction. Rules vary by country, so check the regulator that applies to you.
An eyeglass prescription is not automatically a contact-lens prescription. A translation app also cannot make the conversion. Contacts sit directly on the eye and require an appropriate examination and fitting. Use the current contact-lens prescription and confirm the exact brand or model your professional evaluated.
If the prescription includes CYL and AXIS, a spherical colored lens with a similar SPH is not automatically equivalent. A listing marked 난시용 should be checked for the exact CYL and AXIS options, along with the model specified by your prescriber. Do not round, omit, or choose the nearest value if a selector lacks your prescription.
Turn replacement labels and pack counts into a clear order
원데이 / 1Day indicates a daily format, while 한달용 / 1Month indicates a monthly replacement format in the listing. The package instructions for the exact product control how it is worn, cleaned, stored, and replaced. A monthly label does not mean the lens can be worn overnight or used beyond its schedule.
Quantities such as 10P or 20P can be easy to misread. Confirm whether the seller counts individual lenses or pairs. If the package contains ten individual daily lenses, it is not ten two-eye wears. If the right and left eyes need different powers, you may need different selections or boxes. Specialty products can also be packaged as single lenses, so verify the exact package description before calculating how long an order will last.
Keep three facts separate: replacement format, number of individual lenses, and the wearer’s prescribed values for each eye. This prevents a color name or box image from obscuring how many lenses you are actually purchasing.
Compare two listings without choosing a prescription
Imagine two listings with the same shade name. One is marked daily and lists a box count; the other is monthly and shows a different count. Their shade and a similar SPH value do not make them the same lens. The material, print, dimensions, package quantity, and replacement instructions may differ.
This comparison helps you identify which product details need checking. It cannot determine which lens is clinically appropriate. Write the complete model and version on one line, then record the available package details on another. Separately, keep the right-eye and left-eye contact-lens prescription values. If the listing does not let you match the prescription exactly, leave the gap unresolved and ask the seller and prescriber the relevant questions.
| Question | Best source to check |

| What does this Korean listing term mean? | Seller or manufacturer for the exact listing and package. |
| How many individual lenses are in the box? | Current product page and sealed package label. |
| Does the product match my prescription and fit? | Prescribing eye-care professional and current contact-lens prescription. |
| Is this exact option listed or in stock? | Retailer’s live product page or customer support. |
| How must this lens be cleaned or replaced? | Manufacturer instructions for the exact product. |
Ordering Korean lenses in the United States
A country label, influencer post, or product review cannot establish that a lens is suitable for your eyes or exempt from U.S. rules. FDA guidance classifies decorative and colored contacts as medical devices and says a prescription is required, even when the lens does not correct vision. The FTC Contact Lens Rule guide describes prescription verification and seller responsibilities in the United States.
- Obtain a current contact-lens prescription and fitting for the exact model or an alternative approved by your professional.
- Identify the full product name, shade, replacement format, and package quantity.
- Match OD and OS separately, including each prescribed SPH, CYL, and AXIS field.
- Resolve any missing, translated, or conflicting listing value with the seller and prescriber before purchase.
- When the package arrives, compare the sealed label and parameters with the order before opening.
For U.S. regulatory details, read the FDA guide to colored and decorative contact lenses and the FTC Contact Lens Rule guide for prescribers and sellers. For KPOP2-specific package details, check the live product page and the prescription verification process.
Read care directions as carefully as product terms
Wash and dry your hands before handling lenses. Keep contacts away from tap water and saliva; never share them or stack one lens over another. Reusable lenses require the care and disinfection system specified for the exact product. Follow its replacement schedule, and do not extend wear because a lens still looks clean.
Do not sleep, shower, swim, or use a hot tub in contact lenses unless the exact product and use have been prescribed. Remove lenses and seek prompt professional advice for eye pain, unusual redness, light sensitivity, discharge, swelling, or sudden or persistent blurred vision. See the CDC contact-lens prevention guidance and the store’s wear and care guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does 무도수 mean that I do not need a prescription?
No. It describes a lens with no spherical corrective power. It does not remove fitting or prescription requirements that apply where you live.
Is 착색직경 the same as 직경?
No. 착색직경 generally refers to the printed color area, while 직경 refers to the overall lens diameter. Confirm both values for the exact model.
Does higher water content mean a lens will feel more comfortable?
Not by itself. Water content is one material specification. Fit, lens surface, tear film, environment, and individual factors also matter.
Can I order based on my glasses prescription?
Use a current contact-lens prescription and fitting instead of converting glasses values yourself.
Can I match BC and DIA to my current lens and switch brands?
No. Those values alone do not establish that a different design is interchangeable or suitable for you.
What if a Korean and English page show different values?
Pause the order and ask the seller to confirm the exact product version. Ask your prescriber about the clinical implications of any difference.
What if the listing does not show my prescribed power?
Do not select a nearby value. Ask the seller whether the exact combination is offered and ask the prescriber about a suitable alternative.
What does 10P mean?
Pack notation can vary. Confirm from the current listing or package whether the number counts individual lenses or pairs.
