Colored Contacts 101: Specs, Prescriptions & Care

A practical guide to reading lens specifications, checking your prescription, comparing box quantities, judging color photos, and caring for colored contacts.

Prepared by KPOP2 Editorial Last reviewed September 21, 2026 Sources: FDA, CDC and FTC

Before you choose

Color is personal. Fit and prescription come first.

Colored contacts are medical devices, including lenses with 0.00 power. Use the exact contact-lens product and parameters prescribed for each eye. Remove lenses and seek prompt professional care for pain, marked redness, discharge, light sensitivity, or reduced vision.

01 · Start here

Keep the complete lens identity together

A shade name or one familiar number is not enough to identify a lens. Compare the exact product as a complete set.

01Brand

Who makes the lens.

02Series and shade

The exact model and color.

03Version

Daily, reusable, spherical or toric.

04Parameters

Power and every prescribed field.

05Box contents

Individual lenses, not assumed pairs.

Stop if information conflicts. If the product description, option selector and sealed package do not agree, keep the item unopened and contact KPOP2 before ordering or wearing it.

02 · Read the specs

Separate measurements from appearance

Save every value with its label. “12.8” alone is ambiguous; “Graphic diameter: 12.8 mm” identifies the printed color design.

G.DIA
Graphic diameterThe listed diameter of the printed color design. It does not guarantee a specific enlarging effect.
DIA
Overall diameterThe diameter of the physical lens. Keep it with the prescribed lens identity.
BC
Base curveA curvature specification for the back surface. It is fitting information, not a style score.
Material
Exact material nameHydrogel and Silicone Hydrogel are broad families, not comfort rankings.
Water %
Water contentA material specification—not a comfort percentage or safe wearing-time calculation.
Pattern
Center and outer ringOpacity, edge softness, pupil opening and limbal ring all affect the visible result.

What specifications can tell you

  • Whether you are comparing the same product version
  • The listed size, material and replacement category
  • Which prescribed options the product page offers

What they cannot decide alone

  • Whether the lens is suitable for your eyes
  • Exactly how large or natural the color will look
  • How comfortable the lens will feel or how long to wear it

03 · Check a prescription

Use a contact-lens prescription for the exact order

A glasses prescription and a contact-lens prescription are not interchangeable. A contact-lens prescription follows a lens-specific assessment and keeps the prescribed product and parameters together.

Field Meaning Order check
OD / OS Right eye / left eye Keep every value assigned to the correct eye.
SPH / Power Spherical power in diopters Copy the sign and exact value. Do not assume every step in a range is available.
CYL Cylinder power for astigmatism Do not choose a nearby value when the exact option is absent.
AX / Axis Orientation of cylinder correction Keep it paired with the correct cylinder and eye.
0.00 / Plano No spherical corrective power It does not mean that fitting and care are unnecessary.

United States

Decorative contacts require a prescription even at 0.00 power. Review FDA consumer guidance and KPOP2’s prescription verification information. Requirements vary by market.

04 · Count the supply

A box count is not automatically a pair count

Package quantity is the number of individual lenses supplied. Replacement schedule tells you when each lens is intended to be replaced. Count by eye before comparing price.

Package What one box contains Two-eye planning
10p daily 10 individual daily lenses Up to 5 two-eye uses only when all 10 lenses suit both eyes; otherwise plan one box per eye.
20p daily 20 individual daily lenses Up to 10 two-eye uses under the same exact-configuration condition.
30p daily 30 individual daily lenses Up to 15 two-eye uses under the same exact-configuration condition.
2 reusable lenses Two individual lenses One pair only when both lenses have the prescribed configuration for their assigned eyes.
1 reusable lens One individual lens Two suitable boxes are needed for one pair.

These examples explain supply only; they are not wearing schedules. A Buy1Get1 box counts toward your supply only when the exact lens and every prescribed parameter are suitable.

05 · Keep dates separate

Expiry, replacement and prescription validity are different

01

Package expiry

The printed date concerns the sealed product. Also check the seal, storage instructions and visible condition.

02

Replacement interval

Follow the product instructions and your prescriber’s schedule after opening. “Monthly” does not mean 30 separate wears.

03

Prescription validity

This concerns authorization to order the prescribed lens. It does not replace either product date.

“Daily disposable” is a single-use replacement category. “Daily wear” means wear while awake. Neither phrase authorizes sleeping in lenses, and no safe wearing time can be calculated from water content or box quantity.

06 · Compare color

Use photos as references, not promises

Natural iris depth, pupil size, lighting, camera processing and screen settings can all change the visible result.

  1. 01
    Verify the product

Confirm the exact shade and daily or reusable version shown.

  2. 02
    Compare useful lighting

Look at indirect daylight, ordinary indoor light and a neutral phone photo.

  3. 03
    Read the pattern

Inspect the center blend, outer ring, opacity and graphic diameter.

  4. 04
    Keep questions separate

Appearance photos cannot answer fit, comfort or wearing-time questions.

07 · Wear and care

Build the routine around clean, dry hands and no water

Clean hands

Wash with soap and water, then dry completely with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Keep water away

Never use water or saliva on lenses. Remove lenses before showering, swimming or using a hot tub.

Use fresh solution

For reusable lenses, use compatible disinfecting solution as directed. Never top off old solution.

Care for the case

Rub and rinse it with solution, empty it and air-dry it upside down. Replace it at least every three months or sooner if directed.

Do not extend use

Never clean, store or reuse a daily disposable. Follow the replacement schedule for reusable lenses.

Keep backup glasses

Carry current glasses so lenses can be removed when needed.

Remove the lens if something changes

For pain, marked or persistent redness, swelling, discharge, unusual light sensitivity, injury, or blurred or reduced vision, remove the lens promptly and seek professional care. Keep lenses out until an eye-care professional advises that it is appropriate to resume wear.

For the full routine, read KPOP2 Wear & Care and Authenticity & Lens Safety.

08 · Final order check

Pause once before placing the order

  1. Product

Brand, series, shade, replacement category and spherical or toric version.

  2. Right and left eye

Every selected parameter matches the valid contact-lens prescription.

  3. Supply

Individual lenses per box and number of boxes are enough for both eyes.

  4. Promotion

Both purchased and free options are suitable when ordering a Buy1Get1 product.

  5. Availability

The exact selected options are available; a visible listing alone does not confirm every variation.

  6. Order details

Final price, delivery information and prescription-verification requirements are understood.

Common questions

Colored contacts, clearly answered

Does a larger G.DIA always look more enlarging?

No. G.DIA is the listed printed design diameter. Pattern opacity, edge contrast, natural iris size, pupil size and lighting also affect the visible result.

Can I order with my glasses prescription?

Do not convert a glasses prescription yourself. A contact-lens prescription follows a lens-specific assessment and identifies the lens and parameters needed for the order.

Do 0.00 colored contacts need a prescription in the U.S.?

Yes. Plano decorative contacts are still regulated contact lenses in the United States and require a prescription.

Does high water content mean more comfort?

No. Water content is one material specification. It cannot rank comfort without the complete lens, fit, care, environment and wearer.

Does “20p” mean 20 pairs?

No. It normally means 20 individual lenses. That can equal 10 pairs only when every lens is suitable for both eyes in the exact same configuration.

Can I substitute a brand with the same BC?

No. A shared base-curve number does not establish interchangeability. The prescribed product, material, diameter and complete design also matter.

Can I select the nearest available power or axis?

No. Do not round or substitute prescription parameters yourself. Ask your prescriber about a missing option.

Are daily and monthly versions the same?

Do not assume so. Check the exact version’s material, dimensions, prescribed options and package quantity.

Can I sleep or nap in colored contacts?

Avoid sleeping or napping in lenses unless your eye-care professional specifically directs otherwise for the exact prescribed lens.

Can saline disinfect reusable lenses?

No. Saline can rinse but does not disinfect. Use a compatible contact-lens disinfecting system as directed.

Can UV-filtering contacts replace sunglasses?

No. A verified UV-filter feature applies only to the exact product and does not replace UV-blocking sunglasses or other sun protection.

Can KPOP2 tell me which lens fits my eyes?

KPOP2 can clarify product listings, options and orders. Only an eye-care professional can assess fit, prescribe a lens or recommend a substitute.
